William Stallings
Operating Systems: Internals and Design Principles sixth edition,
Pearson Higher Education
(The fourth edition is acceptable too; the faculty library has several copies of this edition, so you may consult them for free!) You really need the book by April 6, when the Operating Systems part of the course starts. In addition, we strongly recommend you to purchase the following book, which provides useful background knowledge:
Andrew S. Tanenbaum
Structured Computer Organisation, fifth edition
Prentice-Hall, 2006.
After the start of the course, a colleague pointed me to The Art of Assembly Language, an online book by Randall Hyde. Some parts from this book may serve as an alternative to Tanenbaum.
